FWIW I tried various books, sites, tutorials, webcasts, etc and still was pretty much completely baffled by ASP.NET. Then I tried MM framework and made a little progress building a site but still did not understand the fundamentals.

I wound up biting the bullet and going to a week long C#/ASP.NET instructor led class where I could ask the instructor to clarify anything the lectures/examples didn't make blatantly obvious. When I was done I actually had a clue about the whole process, and I've been able to work up to full time ASP.NET development that I've been doing for a couple of years. It was worth every penny!
