W/o using it you could be caught with bugs (not necessary to mention about performance cost with today's hardware maybe).
It's one of those habits I promised myself to develop any time now... years ago. One of the reasons why I didn't is working with teams where nobody does that, and OTOH a good naming convention is enforced, number of public and private variables is kept to a minimum. In the last five years, IIRC, I had only one bug caused by an overlap of a variable with a field, where both the variable and the field were not conforming to the naming scheme. Took about 15 minutes to find, once it was recognized as a bug.
