Dan,
I use Teac CDR50S and Philips (remote now, model ?). Both are good, one SCSI external while other EIDE internal. Make and model doesn't seem so important except not let it be .. (would it be correct to say brand(s) here when impression is absolutely negative ?).
EIDE vs SCSI - a long discussion but if I would buy a new one I would choose EIDE (not open to discussion - accept as self preference).
CDR vs CDRW - Would choose CDRW if cost is feasibly closer to CDR. But would use as CDR till media costs become feasible for CDRW.
If at all possible and cost effective I would choose none but a magnetooptic.
