The Chicago city park I took my daughters to about a million times when they were little is called Chippewa Park.
I grew up in Maine, which has probably as many Indian names as Wisconsin. Penobscot, Madawaska, Messalonskee, on and on and on.
Olympia Snowe, who I wrote about yesterday, is from Lewiston. It is not Indian / Native American, just another faded mill town. It's as ugly as the day is long. If there are any stereotypes they are of the French-Canadians who have settled there and brought bright green and day-glo blue to the home coloring scheme. This is the environment she came from, an ugly mill town. She was orphaned at 6 and widowed at 26 when her first husband died in a car crash. All these circumstances allow her to vote her conscience and for her constituents, which she does.
