>>>I'd like to get my splash screen to appear without the little blip I get when I set _screen.visible = .F. at the top of main.prg. Application.visible property won't work because the _screen has already been exposed by the time the app is created. I'm not sure about the event sequence when main is executed...

It doesn't work either way you look at it. I have yet to find a way to keep the _screen object from appearing until after the splash screen has been shown. It doesn't matter what I put in config.fpw, the VFP screen still flashes momentarily before anything else happens. True in VFP5 and VFP6. It's particulary irritating when you are trying to sell something that is supposed to behave like a "real" program but yet you can't explain to the customer why the screen blips whenever the program is started. I dunno.
