Mandatory sentences for drug possession are also in the category of taking a good idea way too far. There is a world of difference between these things and murder, rape, etc.
I kind of agree, but there is also the argument that somebody with 2 strikes who is dumb or out of control enough to steal VHS tapes from Wal-Mart probably is a danger to society <s>
