In XP, they already ruined the search, in the case of searching for contents (file types that were somehow not "registered" were not searched). You may try to use a separate utility, such as Agent Ransack (freeware). I don't know whether it works for Vista, but in Windows XP, it is definitely better than the fouled-up search built into Windows.
