On the same computer that has the problem, are you able to open Outlook, then create a new mail and have Word open successfully as the e-mail editor?

One thing that happens sometimes is there are orphaned instances of winword.exe and/or outlook.exe left running in Task Manager that have no UI. You have to kill those manually in Task Manager after closing all the visible Office applications.
