One thing to check in XP is whether ClearType is being used:

Display Properties...Appearance...Effects...Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:

Choices are Standard or ClearType. Whatever the current setting is, try the other one.

Be advised that if the screen is an LCD panel running at less than native resolution, and/or the user is using Large (i.e. 120 dpi font size) or a Custom font size (other than the standard 96dpi), fonts look fuzzy/muddy on XP. Vista+ are better at handling these conditions.
