I have recently experimented with openoffice using python. I discovered one cool fact - you can use openoffice as a server. All you need is to install a copy openoffice on the company server and then talk to it directly. I was able to send five jobs at once and it handled it. I sent spreadsheets and text doc's all printed. But I'd be concerned that if you had lots of doc's the server would fail.
