>>Driving home from the grocery store just now I was waiting at a red light and was struck by a sign at that intersection. (And boy did that hurt, Dragan).

>>How come? Why not just "Library" instead of the symbols? Aren't people who might be interested in going there likely to understand English? There is a substantial Hispanic population, so maybe bilingual (probably unnecessary in most cases), but it's not like this little library has books in all the languages of the world. Almost everything is in English, with a small Spanish section. Very curious.

>Most people will automatically tune out anything that doesn't specifically look like a traffic sign. And the library sign (yes, we have the same ones here) is reserved for public libraries - or else I could have such a sign in front of the [s]house[/s] home, considering the number of books that have cropped up over the years. Maybe multiple signs outside, then smaller signs pointing to my disk with lots of .vcx and .prg files.

>>Another sign I noticed near here recently was in front of a drive-up fast food place. The sign out front said "0.99¢ Specials." Do they not realize they are offering to sell things for less than a penny? (And how would they make change?)

>Take a picture and submit to failblog.org, they love that kind of stuff. Now that I've mentioned it, you'll probably waste the rest of the weekend on it :).

>>How come abbreviation is such a long word?
>>How come you drive on a parkway and park in a driveway?
>>How come they put fresh dates on yogurt and sour cream? Is that the date it goes good?
>
>How come that if you paint yourself into a corner you still have no paint on yourself? (or anyone else's self)

>>Additions encouraged!
>
>Thanks, but it still doesn't feel courageous. I mean, the one addition I had - I asked it if it was encouraged, and it just shied away into the dark corner below the deskbottom (of course, as desktop has its own light source, deskbottom has a [s]heavy[/s] darkness source).
>
>update: ooooops... I was wrong. Scratch that last paragraph.

>Whom did the additions encourage?

Encourage

1. give somebody hope or confidence: to give somebody hope, confidence, or courage
2. urge somebody to do something: to motivate somebody to take a course of action or continue "doing something encouraged me to finish the course"
3. foster something: to assist something to occur or increase encourage new solutions to traffic problems
