Thanks I hadn't thought of that, but I don't have a second box with sata drives... and once I unplugged the 1TB drive in an attempt to get a repair to run, windows booted up, I uninstalled the last patch, pluged the drive back and windows is back to hanging so it looks like this second drive might have flaked out on me.
Now I gotta see if I can get some drive diagnostics running on it.
