AFAIK we are the only so-called evolved country that allows it. That should tell us something, but it seems to be having the opposite effect. Enthusiasm for putting criminals to death is only increasing.
I do not hate my country. There are some among us who reflexively seek to paint any criticism as lack of patriotism, and successfully so. My patriotism is there with anyone's. I just think part of what made us a great country in the first place is the freedom to speak freely and to criticize the government. That will get you killed a lot of places.
