Think about what you're saying. To me this is the ultimate paradox of capital punishment -- "You have done the most heinous thing possible, you have taken the life of another human being. And for that we're going to kill you." If you put that thought in a bird's brain the bird would fly backwards.

It also says something to me that we are the only "civilized" nation which practices capital punishment. It's pretty much us and the Arab nations, isn't it? Not exactly inspiring company. That is not kowtowing to the other civilizen nations, just an acknowledgment that when there are dozens of countries on one side and one on the other, the holdout may need to do a little thinking.

I don't think of life in prison as encouragement to repent. It's just the most severe sentence possible, short of death.
