Thanks -- will have to take a look at the connection parameters again. I don't recall seeing anything unusual however, and it's been quite some time when the portion of the program that establishes a connection had changed.
With regards to antivirus -- will have to check that, though I don't think that could be the problem, as I don't seem to have any problem elsewhere in the program where I'm performing similar queries.
