I'm not sure about the U.S., but in Canada, the customary jury size is 12, but there can be exceptions. In fact, for misdemeanors, the jury can be as small as 6 people.

Don't they have standby jurors in the U.S.? In Canada there are normally more than 12 people chosen. Some are standbys who step in if a juror cannot continue for whatever reason.
