After going for a LONG time w/o any anti-virus software running I tried out Microsoft Security Essentials (which is free). It doesn't seem to kill system performance like most AV software and it actually appears to be able to remove viruses w/o a lot of fanfare. I've had good luck with it on all the machines I've installed it on.
