>Some people have to work harder than others to achieve (or not). That is what socialists have a difficult time understanding. Our constitution guarantees us life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That is, we all have the same opportunity. We do not have a guarantee of the same results. Socialism apires to the highest common factor but results in the lowest common denominator.
Marcia,
Socialism as you describe is dead. It does not exist anywhere anymore, only in cuba perhaps. Also I don't agree that we all have the same opportunities. If you are born in a poor and hopeless environment its much and much tougher than when you are born as a child of millionaires. That is to say, we are not born equal.
It is great that in most western countries we under the rule of social democracy have equalised the opportunity part much more than it was in the past. At least now you don't have to be a child of rich parents to get good education and good job opportunities. This was a lot different in the past centuries.
It is also great to see that in the US there is a realisation that everyone needs to have the right to affordable and high quality healthcare, irregardless whether you are born with poor or rich parents.
