That may be true.

I can tell you my younger daughter was seriously shaken up earlier this week. A girl/woman, aged 20, was killed in a car crash in which alcohol is strongly suspected. Emily worked last summer as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the public pool here and this girl was her boss. The dead girl went to the archrival high school, Grant in Fox Lake, and apparently had friends everywhere around here. One of those people who everyone is friends with or wants to be.

On Tuesday Emmo went to the wake. The girl who picked her up, another lifeguard, could not drive her home. I went and got her. She was very quiet on the way home.

I asked her what it was like. Very sad, she said. I asked whether it was an open casket and she said yes. Emily said she didn't look like herself at all.
