I'd recommend looking at some of the text-oriented utilities derived from the Unix world - your best bet for leads would probably by Either FSF (Free Software Foundation; the GNU Project people) or O'Reilly & Associates (www.ora.com). I remember that ORA put out a book that included some DOS utilities to do this sort of stuff, but can't remember the title.
