I don't know exactly why the old series ended, but it looked to me like they ran out of story lines. The first 2/3 took place almost exclusively in the Village, but the last 1/3 seemed he was always under some type of illusion that he was out of the Village. Seems it would have been better to mix them throughout the series.

I couldn't get all the way through the new version, despite Ian McKellan being in it. I found it so boring. So, I don't know how it ended.
