>I am wondering which one is higher in the hierarchy. Is it a database file or a database filegroup? The database property sheet lists Files before Filegroups. However, when I go at http://www.mssqltips.com/tip.asp?tip=1112 and read the second piece of code, it shows about adding a file to a filegroup. I always saw it as adding a filegroup to a file. So, basically, can a file have several filegroups or can a filegroup have several files?

From documentation as is:
"No file can be a member of more than one filegroup".

A filegroup can have multiple files (files are members).
