If JimB says AFIELDS() is your best, if not only, bet, it's all but carved in stone. The only other reliable way that I can think of would be to open the table with the low level file functions and examine the header. To me, this is unacceptable because of the overhead involved. AFIELDS() on the other hand is fast, with little overhead, and reliable.
