Most kids who go out of their way to express themselves by their physical appearance, are often doing so because they haven't been taught the value of other qualities.
Sorry, it's not that simple. Most of them will rebel about something. The goal is to make it something you can live with.
And yes, we guided our kids into good paths and their rebellions were minor.
