Two questions about mirroring for SQL Server 2008 experts out there.

1.) Can the mirror (i.e., the backup) server be accessed for read-only purposes. For example, to confirm it has current transactions and data? If so, are snapshots the only way?

2.) In cases where the mirror (backup) server is at a physically separate location than the primary, is it possible to perform tape backups at the mirror?
