And of course even though both MS-Office and OpenOffice use a PKZipped XML format, I've noticed compatibility problems between them -- despite both claiming to conform to a standard (standards are a good thing -- everyone should have one). So now we've got a mostly-text archive using an "open standard" that different parties have chosen to interpret or implement differently, rather than a proprietary binary format that various parties have chosen to interpret or implement differently...
