The last good Acrobat was v4. After that, they introduced more and more bloat, changed the format internally and generally tried to make the standard they set do all things it wasn't designed for. I was looking for a way for users to download a form, fill it and email back, and fillable PDF looked like the ticket... except it was unusable. The latest (9.x?) had it all but it cost an arm and a leg, and it also required the end users to have that same version, plus it required a server app to run (and that's AR's server, not something we can incorporate in our app), older versions of the reader (and readers from others) weren't able to read the file with these features etc etc. What others had in this regard was either limited, or just wouldn't work, or wouldn't save etc etc. In the end, a web app turned out to be simpler to do than this.
