The answer is no. Regulators will never coherently explain why AIG could not be allowed to go bankrupt in September of 2008. My reasoning is simple. If there was a simple coherent and justifiable (politically, morally, economically, whathaveyou) reason, the decision-makers would have already given it in unison. The fact that 17 months later they are still offering divergent reasoning suggests that there is no adequate explanation for their emergency action, nor the follow-up bailouts.
