Anyway, what I did is I kept information about the system date (stored in an encrypted file, along with everything else needed to control the trial period). If the system date ever got reset to an earlier date, the application would know it because it would compare the current system date with the previous system date that was saved and would immediately invalidate the trial period.
Yes, there may be valid reasons for changing the system date that had nothing to do with the user trying to outwit the trial period of my software, but in that case a simple phone call to me would allow them to get another "key" ... if they were entitled to one.
