>Long time family friends of ours own a vinyard/winery and sell grapes to many wineries in Napa. Years ago, we were tasting a Cab at a winery that had used their Petite Syrah grapes to "fix" the color of the Cab, as it was naturally too light that year. When this was mentioned to the tasting room manager he adamantly argued that their Cab was 100%. It took a direct phone call to the winemaker himself to convince him otherwise. We still laugh about it.

That is the conclusion I've reached also. Personally speaking, the point of diminishing returns seems to be around $20 for west-coast reds. The few $100 bottles of wine I've consumed were very good, just not 5 times better than the $20 bottles. I enjoy German rieslings and decent ones are impossible to find in MT for less than $30.
