The default has been changed because 99% of the users who would want to participate in such a few forum would miss it otherwise. This would then act as an interference with the purpose of making a forum grow. We have seen that with the .NET forum. Even after a few years, I got emails from people who were never aware we had one here. So, this approach has been chosen. This is why I prefer it like this and, as mentioned, the member who doesn't want it can always simply uncheck the forum form the list of forum participation after, such as expressed here.

I understand that you are concentrating your activity on the site to a specific set of forums. But, we have to see it in a global point of view where this approach of opting only on demand has been a negative factor here since the debut and we lost a lot of traffic because of that. We are also following what Facebook does and other giants. They go with this approach as a default for most of their options, if not all, but the option to opt out is always there.

Thank you for your feedback but I hope you understand the difficult situation this has caused us over the years and in order to continue to support this product, among other things, I had to make an adjustment in regards to that.

Keep also in mind that the addition of a new forum is not something that happens every day. Only two in the last few years have been added, but they should have been more however.
