Looking at the size of newspaper the neighbor's lawn is littered with, that slot would have to be sufficiently sized to allow a whole hand to be inserted. Also, American tradition dictates throwing the newspaper on the lawn. At least, nowadays these are shrink wrapped. I guess in the old days there was some perverse pleasure in wet newspaper.
