I bought my mom a Dell Studio 1737 and it's really nice and no hassles or problems so far. I went with a Dell at the time because it was a great system for her and she is 72 and needs the customer support. I've used Dell latitudes before but this is the first studio. However, according to Craig's link it's low on the totem pole. I've never known anyone with a reliable ASUS but they have to be top of the list for a reason so I'd start there.
