Now here is a weird one. The Dutch four man bobsled team has withdrawn from the Olympics, before the event. Reason: the driver is too scared to take the sled down the course. This sounds like The Onion, doesn't it? Evidently it's for real, though ---

The other day a Dutch speedskater had the gold medal in the 10,000 meters wrapped up with a few laps left and a huge lead. His coach signaled him to change lanes, as they do periodically so both skaters have the same distance to cover. He thought it was a lap too soon but the coach insisted and he did it. Turns out the skater was right and the coach had miscounted. Goodbye gold medal. To his credit the coach, a former Olympic skater himself, was heartbroken and took full responsibility. But that gold isn't coming back.
