I found an article on the web describing SSIS as a way to import the database. My primary concern is not to break anything in my SQL Server 2005. Is this (SSIS) method a safe and efficient method of importing Access into SQL Server? Or would you recommend another approach?

Go with SSIS. Create an extra database (staging) for now if you don't want to risk importing into your main database.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
