Odds are there should be a way to do it - but of if it's some oddball format you might have an issue.
The only tricky thing I've ever had to deal with as far as images goes is when someone wanted to view multi-page .tiff (fax) images. It was just one .tiff file - but had multiple images in it because the fax was several pages long. For that I used this activex
