It has to do with how you make your selections in the BLG. When you select Required, and SetDefault, and AllowEmpty Value checkboxes. Required means it cannot be a null value. Allow empty value would mean an empty string is OK.

Check the dev guide topic Mere Mortals .NET Business Objects / Using the MM Business Layer Generator / Step 3 Select Database Items and look down near the bottom it explains this.
