Bob: thank you for your input. I did find weird 'data' in the file that was the target of the update operation that caused the crash. The weird data was at the bottom of the table when 2 particular tags were invoked--I'm doing a 'copy to' and still waiting for the reindex (1.5gb file with many tags in cdx); I'll probably know tomorrow am.
