Unfortunately it didn't actually work in the end - your proposal certainly retrieved records in MNO and date descending order, but where there is 2 or more records with the same MNO but different dates, all of these were retrieved when in fact I need only the latest date record to be retrieved, ie, if there is:

MNO Date

100 98.02.03
100 98.03.10 * This is the record needing retrieval
100 98.01.15
102 98.05.03
103 98.04.01
100 97.10.04
etc

I need therefore the records to be somehow grouped in MNO and Date order so that the one with the most recent date is picked up. Any further ideas? ....I am very gratefful for your help!
