on another note, I really don't mean to be disdainful of conspiracy theories as they are often better explanations of otherwise badly explained phenomena.

One of my favorites, which I believe has some truth, involves Watergate.

Bob Woodward, when he was in the Navy, worked for ONI, the Office of Naval Intelligence, which in some ways spookier than CIA and at the time was right up there with NSA. He was also a briefer for Alexander Haig.

The CIA ties in the burglars themselves was obvious. The getting caught was so hamfisted as to almost be deliberate.

It is thought by some the CIA wanted to bring Nixon down. Some really interesting stuff has been written on the subject. If anybody wants to really enjoy some conspiratorial writing I recommend Carl Oglesby ( The Yankee Cowboy War ) or Jim Hougan (Secret Agenda etc ) or Jim Marrs

All fun stuff and like religion and philosophy most it has some grain of truth.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
