I need to test a user_related_string against an encrypted output. I intend to typically encode the concatenated user_related_string+long_enough_key_embedded_in_software.

Any practical recommendation in terms of use for this basic protection ? Would HMAC the string with SHA-1 and a decent key do the trick?
