>Doesn't this: I have mine set up to only check-out something when I Save a file, not when I edit it ... defeat the purpose? I am not using TFS but Vault and if I don't check stuff out *before* I edit I am sure to have surprises when I try to save. No Disrespect here, just asking. Maybe TFS works differently than I am used to.

You can tell whether you've not yet checked out something by the little "lock" icon in the Solution Explorer and on the tab of the file you're editing. So, there shouldn't be any "surprises".

The reason I don't like to have it set up to automatically check-out as soon as I start typing, is that I'll frequently be looking for some Intellisense help, or something similar, in a file that I have no intention of checking out. I can start typing in this file to see the Intellisense without actually checking it out. Then I just Ctrl-Z to undo that typing. I wouldn't be able to do that if I had it set-up to automatically check-out as soon as I start editing.

If it's actually a file I *do* intend on checking out, I'll usually do it before I start editing it anyway.

Make sense?
