Hi JohnK,

Well here's another one for you. . .

Since I made my *first* purchase of a VS suite (6.0, obviously) and now have VB at hand, I have been watching mags for various 'takes' on VS 6.0 generally and also VB 6.0 in particular.

One magazine I bought, a MS publication no less, is titled "Microsoft Interactive Developer". Right there in 30+ bold on the cover is "Visual Studio 6.0" and a pre-title of" Choosing the right tool for your web app!". Listed beside the 30+ font are: Visual Basic, Visual InterDev, Visual C++ and Visual J++. *NO* Visual FoxPro. In fact, I have yet to come across the words Visual FoxPro anywhere in any article so far!

What lessons should one take from that?. . .

1) The VFP team missed the boat(again)???

2) VFP isn't *really* useful for WEB apps????

3) VFP's level of "integration" into VS is more lip-service than fact??

4) All of the above.

5) None of the above?

I guess I'm glad that I now have VB at hand!

Regards,

Jim N

>While this may have bummed you out, compare your experience with what it would have been in 96 or 97. There would have been *no* mention of VFP and you would have been laughed at (well - maybe that's extreme) if you asked about it.
>
>I believe that MS is doing a credible job of marketing VFP with VS6. Development is not a popularity contest. For once, there are FAQs at MS clearly stating where you would use VFP over VB in middleware -and- where you would use VFP in lifecycle development over Access.
>
>Personally, I believe that MS is giving me just enough support to be able to offer VFP as a reasonable alternative to VB and Access in almost every situation and that's fine with me.

>>I wanted to report (from a VFP point of view) about the MS Booth at Internet Expo this week in the Jacob Javits Center NYC .
>>
>>They had a tiny corner for VFP which was manned by someone demoing ... VB6. When I asked for a demo, he said the rep who knew it well was not there (he was at lunch at 1130am, ...yeah, right..).
>>
>>I did talk to him for a little about this problem of MS's lack of marketing of the product. He said that MS recognizes and is committed to VFP for the long haul. However they are doing it to keep us guys happy and not for any new programmers. I asked him why is that. He said that all new programmers are asking for is VB.
>>
>>In their presentation theater at the booth, MS was demoing Visual Studio on huge monitors. The big banner on top mentioned everything on the VS except... VFP. I asked him about that. He said that MS did not think anyone would show up!
>>
>>He did admit that they are doing a bad marketing job and that several people did ask for VFP (But since the booth was manned by a VB expert, they could not demo it).
>>
>>He also said that when they go into the big corporate sites they don't push for any language in particular. The clients seem to choose VB though (Now,,, why is that? Could it be that they don't demo it in their big theater presentations?)
>>
>>Of course the above info comes from one guy (me), at a particular show, from a particular MS rep. So.. it may be no big deal. Maybe at other shows they do present VFP as part of studio.
>>
>>The MS rep said he was sympathetic to our problem and MS's lack of marketing.
>>
>>Before I left he politely asked me if I wanted a demo of their new VB6. I said: No thanks.. and walked away looking for a corner to lick my wounds.
