I've given up trying to use SSIS for excel imports. SSIS makes assumptions based on sampling the spreadsheet as to what type of data is in a column, and it doesn't care what you tell it.

I've switched to using Access to upsize an Excel spreadsheet into a SQL table. That is the only real use I have ever had for Access.
