I did find a tutorial online on codeguru.com that lays out ADO.NET, and Entity Framework. I think I will go through my soon-to-arrive ADO.NET book anyway to at least be able to work on Legacy code, and perhaps even do new work with it.

I do belong to a .NET user group, but I am sure that most of those people have already covered data handling, but I think I should ask if they would do that in a separate session; there may be others who are also in the same boat as I am. My user group is in southern California, http://www.iedotnetug.org/sf .

The Philly.NET group is terrific and Microsoft gives them good support.
This past weekend, Microsoft hosted an all day Firestarter session on this very topic, featuring .NET MVP's with solid, practical data handling experience. They answered all the questions I had before I asked them.
You've got to learn the basics of ADO.NET tho and there's no shortcut to it so bite the bullet and learn about those data tables!
