No they don't too often. A couple of states like North Carolina now have "Innocence Inquiry Commissions" to help deal with these situations.
Texas certainly has a horrible track record with things like this - however Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins has opened the criminal files of hundred of local convicts for review, ordering DNA testing for those who may have been wrongfully convicted and last time I checked he had already help get two wrongfully convicted men exonerations. Naturally there are a lot of people in Dallas who don't like the guy because they think he should do nothing but lock people up. He keeps trying to point out that the idea is to get to the truth but some idiots don't seem to be willing to hear that.
