>>Yesterday my office machine was working fine. This morning I accessed it from home. It had restarted after Windows automatic update overnight. Now CPU usage is 100%, hardly any of it in System Idle Process. It's worst when iexplorer is running (40-60% of CPU usage). Windows task manager takes a bigger chunk than usual. Forget about doing useful work.

Thanks for the Tracy. I will check both places. The processes using the most CPU are iexplorer and task manager. After I close iexplorer from the task manager, system idle goes back up to about 65%; still a small number considering I am doing absolutely nothing useful. Something is living in iexplorer, I fear. I am staring up Process Explorer to see what it says.
