You may not be aware of this, but the GST replaced the hidden 13% Manufacturer's Sales Tax (MST) that was included in just about everything. Benefits of GST over MST:

- Lower rate (albeit applied to services now, which MST wasn't)
- Not hidden (i.e. built into the sales price)
- Flow-through tax for business (they get to claim GST paid against GST collected) so it doesn't affect prices.
- Not multiplied. Under MST, Part A created by Company 1 had MST. Part A used by Company 2 to create Part B added another layer of MST. Part B used by Company 3 to create Part C added another layer of MST, and so on. The net effect is paying tax on tax on tax for many manufactured goods.
