The guys in REM probably had the hots for Cindy Wilson when they were in high school. (Well, maybe not Michael Stipe).
Now I have an urge to listen to the B-52s and then the Byrds. You can draw a straight line from the jangly sound of REM and Tom Petty back to Roger McGuinn and his 12 string guitar.
UPDATE -- Holy moley. Don't ask me how I jumped from there to here but I just landed on the late, great Otis Redding. Here is the horn and vocal driven sound the Blues Brothers stole to such great advantage. (Some of the same players, I think).
