Detroit Area Fox User Group (DAFUG) presents:
"Dropping ACID (or the NoSQL movement and introduction to MongoDB)", by Mike Feltman

At the heart of traditional RDBMS systems lies a concept abbreviated as
ACID: Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation and Durability. ACID is paramount in many business applications, but ACID has its costs. Each of these areas create hurdles that many applications really do not have a business reason to have to leap them. There's a growing movement in the database world called "NoSQL" which drops various pieces of ACID in favor of performance, scalability and flexibility. In this session we'll discuss the NoSQL movement and why many major players such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, Linked In, Apache and Oracle have jumped on its bandwagon. We'll start with a high-level view of the NoSQL world and the numerous database offerings in it, discuss why a "NoSQL" database may make sense in some instances and then finally we'll follow that up with a look at one of the popular NoSQL databases named MongoDB. At the end of this session you may just find you've got a reason to drop ACID.

You will learn:

- What the NoSQL Movement is and why it’s important
- Who the major players are in the NoSQL Movement and what their offerings are
- How to use the MongoDB shell to work with MongoDB
- Why they might want to use a NoSQL Database

You might learn:

- How to do queries, inserts, updates and deletes to MongoDB from VFP

DAFUG meets on the second or third Thursday of the month (except for July).

Admission to DAFUG meetings will be granted free to anyone for 1 (one) meeting. After that you must either join the group (at the low cost of $30 a year, $15 for a half year) or you will be asked to pay $5 per meeting you attend. The $5 will grant you admission but no other rights or privileges of membership.
